A student was caught with cannabis after police went to a car park in Huddersfield to check a report of a man acting suspiciously.

David Lampitt prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court yesterday Vykintas Pinaitis was found at the back of the car park in the dark without a car but officers immediately detected a strong smell of cannabis.

A stop and search revealed three small sealable bags of the drug. He was then put in a police car when it was noticed he had another bag with a small amount of white powder inside.

His home address was subsequently searched and some more cannabis and some pills were found.

The drugs were sent for analysis and proved to be 47.2 grammes of skunk cannabis worth around £403, 5.89 grammes of amphetamine and traces of three other class C drugs. Pinaitis accepted he had been dealing £10 bags of cannabis to friends while the rest was for himself.

The court was told Pinaitis had been smoking cannabis since he was about 13 and had sold to friends for “very limited gain.”

He had recently completed an IT course at Kirklees college.

Pinaitis, 20 of Fanny Moor Lane, Lowerhouses, admitted possessing cannabis with intent to supply and possession of amphetamine and other class C drugs. He was given a 12 month community order with 100 hours unpaid work and a 15 day activity requirement.

Judge Tom Bayliss QC told him: “You were caught red-handed with this cannabis and you must learn that the supply of cannabis is taken seriously by the courts but because you have never been in trouble before I can deal without you without sending you to custody.”
