STUDENTS and staff from Huddersfield University who give blood have been thanked with an award.

The National Blood Service's Supporter Loyalty Award recognises the continued support of the university by its hosting of regular blood donor sessions.

The collections used to take place in the former Great Hall, then moved to St Paul's Street Drill Hall, the Territorial Army premises.

Ian Hirstle, the university's publications manager, was presented with the award.

He began giving blood in Holmfirth in the 1960s.

After joining the staff of the former Polytechnic in 1975 he began giving blood there when regular collections started.

Mr Hirstle holds a Silver Award for the number of donations he has made over the years.

The Supporter Loyalty Awards aim to thank and reward blood donors, supporters and staff who all play an important part in improving the lives of thousands of sick and injured people every year.

Laura Summers, spokeswoman for the National Blood Service said: "The blood donors at Huddersfield University deserve a big thank-you.

"At each session here we collect about 100 units of blood, which provides more than a third of the blood needed by patients in the Huddersfield area every week.

"We hope that the student donors continue to perceive giving blood as a very good reason for taking time out from their studies!" added Ms Summers.
