A man escaped with superficial burns after a suspected gas explosion as he made lunch.

The man, believed to be 68, was cooking a meal at about 12.40pm when the explosion happened.

The blast blew down an internal wall and shattered windows, scattering glass up to 75ft away.

Police, ambulance and fire crews attended and the man was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for treatment.

His neighbours in a block of maisonettes in Thorpe Lane, Almondbury, were evacuated.
