A DOG had a lucky escape after it plunged over a cliff edge at a disused quarry near Huddersfield.

Merlot the Spaniel slipped over the 60ft precipice, but then landed on a ledge a quarter of the way down.

The accident happened while the pet’s owner was walking three dogs at an abandoned quarry just off Drury Lane, Stainland, at 12.30pm yesterday.

Firefighters from Elland were called to the scene, and discovered the frightened two-year-old dog perched on a ledge 15ft below a path.

A firefighter was lowered down to the ledge, and a harness was then adapted to lift the fortunate pooch to safety.

Firefighters said the dog suffered no injuries, and was deemed to be fit and well.
