A LUCKY householder from Oakes has netted a £1,000 prize through the Kirklees Council’s electoral canvass prize draw.

Mr Leslie Winterbottom will receive his prize from the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Jean Calvert.

To take part in the competition, Mr Winterbottom had to sign up on the register of electors by September 5.

The contest was to encourage householders to register and it is not too late to register to vote if you haven’t yet returned your Register of Electors form. The register is published each year on December 1 and you need to be on the register before you can vote.

Reasons for registering are: You get to have a say in local and parliamentary elections; those who are not on the register may find it difficult to open

a bank account, get a loan or mortgage, get credit or hire purchase, apply for a store card or catalogue or buy a mobile phone; and you must register by law, even if you don’t intend to vote. You could be fined £1,000 if you do not.
