A teenager gave false details to police after they caught him with a knife in Huddersfield town centre.

Luke Hirst, of Keldregate in Deighton , pleaded guilty to charges of possession of a bladed article in public and obstructing police officers.

The 18-year-old had attracted the attention of town centre CCTV operatives on Monday (June 20) at 8.20pm.

He was closely monitored as they believed he had possession of a knife, Kirklees magistrates heard.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman said: “He was seen showing something shiny to his friends, police attended and he had a Stanley knife in his pocket.

“The defendant said he used this for work but wasn’t prepared to disclose his employer to police so that they could verify that account.”

Hirst also initially lied to police that his name was ‘Daniel Noble’.

Magistrates heard that he had a previous conviction for perverting the course of justice.

Cheryl Ford, mitigating, said that her client works as a packer for cash in hand.

She told magistrates that Hirst had panicked when first questioned by police because he didn’t want to go back to prison.

Magistrates ordered a full report ahead of Hirst’s sentencing on July 13.

They warned him that they were not ruling out custody or committing him to crown court for sentencing.
