A FRIENDSHIP and dating agency for adults with a learning disability is coming to Kirklees.
Chris Chittell, who plays Eric Pollard in the TV soap Emmerdale, will be attending a party to officially launch Luv2meetU next Thursday at Northorpe Hall in Mirfield.
The event, which runs from 4pm to 8pm, aims to provide information about the service to potential members and those interested in learning more about volunteering.
Initially set up by learning disability charity, Hft, Luv2meetU will focus on supporting people with learning disabilities and their families to develop and sustain friendships and relationships, helping to improve their overall health and well-being and extending their social networks.
The service has been jointly funded by Kirklees Council and the Big Lottery Fund and supported by Northorpe Hall.
Christine White, support development worker for Luv2meetU in Kirklees, said: “We know it can be difficult to meet new friends and get out and about.
“That is why this service organises the events our members tell us they want and supports them to enjoy activities ranging from bowling and swimming to meals out and club nights. We also offer a one to one dating service.”
The agency, originally known as Stars in the Sky Yorkshire, began in 2007 as a one-year pilot in Leeds and Wakefield. The project continued as a result of funding from the Big Lottery Fund in 2009. It was developed further two years later by Hft when it became a community interest company and re-branded as Luv2meetU.
Kirklees is the sixth Luv2meetU service and joins branches already operating in Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield, Calderdale and Derbyshire.
