UP to £250,000 is available to build a new community hall - and someone in Huddersfield could win it.

Winners of the national Wren Village and Community Hall Challenge must show the environmental benefits of their scheme.

Huddersfield Labour MP Barry Sheerman urged groups in the town to make bids.

"This challenge will allow voluntary and community service organisations to gain the support they deserve for the outstanding contributions they make," he said.

The award is being funded by a scheme in which rubbish dump operators can give up to 6.8% of their landfill tax liability to environmental projects.

Mr Sheerman said: " I am thrilled to see these type of schemes providing cash for community service and environmentally-sound programmes."
