A BUSY bridge in Kirklees will shut next month for work lasting almost 10 months.

Whitechapel Road bridge, which carries the B6120 over the M62 near Cleckheaton, will close on August 16 to allow major bridge replacement works to begin.

It will be shut to both traffic and pedestrians for about 42 weeks.

Diversion routes will be in place for drivers and cyclists and a free bus service for the use of pedestrians who would normally use the bridge will be provided for the duration of the works.

Highways Agency project manager, Tim Calvert, said: “We understand that this work will cause disruption for local residents and we are putting in measures to minimise the inconvenience.

“Investigations have shown it would not be economical to repair the bridge and the only option is to replace it.

“Overnight closures of the M62 motorway will be required for the removal of the bridge and to put the new bridge in place.”
