The M62 was closed for several hours after a lorry jack-knifed near Rishworth Moor.
The food delivery lorry became trapped, blocking three lanes eastbound just before junction 22, at around 9.45am this morning (Tuesday).
Highways England and Greater Manchester Police worked to move the vehicle, which temporarily trapped motorists driving from Manchester towards Huddersfield and Leeds.
Highways England reported severe delays with trafric for nine miles, with some drivers on Twitter saying it took two hours to drive just two miles.
An image posted to the Highways North West twitter account said recovery of the jack-knifed HGV was 'complex'.
At lunchtime cars were allowed to use the hard shoulder to get past the HGV, and the motorway was re-opened at 1pm.
