DRIVERS face huge delays this morning after a smash has closed the westbound M62.
A car and a lorry crashed close to Chain Bar at junction 26 of the M62 around 6am this morning.
A man and a woman, who were travelling in the car were left seriously injured.
Tailbacks streamed along the M62 back to around junction 28 for the White Rose Centre despite a diversion being set up.
Queues from Leeds also built on the M621.
Traffic on the eastbound carriageway was also heavy due to people slowing to look at the scene.
Brighouse, which was on the diversion route, was solid with traffic say reports. There were bus delays of up to 40 minutes for passengers on the X6 and 363 services through Brighouse.
With drivers leaving the motorway to try alternate routes, the A62 through Birstall, Liversedge and Robertown was at a standstill, with queues lasting over an hour and a half.
Slip roads on to the A62 were also heavily blocked, leaving commuters stuck.
The lorry driver was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary by ambulance for what is believed to be a routine check-up.
A police spokesman confirmed reports that the M62 Westbound was expected to remain closed for the entire morning.
A Highways Agency spokesman said: "The M62 westbound is currently closed between J26 (M606 Chain Bar) and J25 (A644 Brighouse) due to a serious incident.
"The link road from the M606 southbound to the M62 westbound has also been closed due to this incident.
"A signed diversion is in operation with all vehicles advised to leave the M62 westbound at J26 and follow the hollow diamond symbol via the A58, A641 and A644 to rejoin the M62 at J25."
