BIKERS and drivers angry at soaring fuel costs will bring hold-ups to the M62 on Saturday.

Hundreds of protestors will join a go-slow from Hartshead Moor into Manchester.

And the protestors are billing the demonstration as “May-Hem” – the Biggest Fuel Protest in the UK.

They say it will allow motorists to vent their anger over the rising cost of duty on fuel which is currently around 75p per litre.

The protest, expected to start at 9am, is an echo of the infamous 2008 protests which took place on motorways across the country.

A spokesman said: “We have protested when a barrel of oil was around $140.00 which pushed a litre of fuel up to £1.21.9, which was a record high in the UK.

“Just this week BP is charging £1.22.9 for unleaded and the barrel price is just $81.00.

“This pushes up the price of your daily bread and milk and it’s not fair.

“We are days from a general election, so we have a chance for the political elite to realise we as a nation are cheesed off and maybe they will listen.”

The meet will begin on the westbound side of Hartshead Moor services from 7am.

The rolling convoy of vehicles will set off at 9am, with a rendezvous with other protestors at Birch Services, 23 miles away, before a final run into Manchester city centre.

Police are planning to supervise the protest.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We have been made aware of the protest and have been liaising with Greater Manchester Police and the Highways Agency, as well as the protestors to ensure that the demonstration can pass peacefully, safely and legally.

“Any offences or traffic management issues on the day will be dealt with appropriately by the relevant organisation.

“Throughout the duration of the demonstration we will make sure that appropriate plans are in place to minimise disruption..”
