A CRASH on the M62 caused misery for Christmas shoppers.

A lorry and a car collided on the westbound carriageway at junction 28 - the turn-off for the White Rose Shopping centre in Leeds - just before 1pm yesterday.

The lorry shed its load of gas canisters. Police shut the motorway in both directions.

Experts from the lorry's company were called in to clear the canisters.

Two lanes of the eastbound carriageway were opened at 1.35pm, but the other carriageway remained closed until 3.15pm.

The crash caused massive tailbacks in both directions and a knock-on effect in Huddersfield with drivers searching for alternative routes.
