DRIVERS have again been warned that stretches of the M62 will be closed at the weekend for roadworks.
The Highways Agency said additional closures will take place for the removal of Whitechapel Bridge which crosses the M62 between Junction 25 at Clifton and 26 at Chain Bar.
These closures are necessary as during last weekend’s bridge demolition work it was not possible to remove a large bridge beam during the planned overnight closure.
In order to safely remove the beam and complete demolition to the westbound span of the bridge, it will be necessary to close both the eastbound and westbound carriageways. Work will take place from 9pm on Saturday to 9am on Sunday.
This was originally advertised as just a westbound closure. An additional westbound full closure is also required from 9pm on Sunday to 6am on Monday.
Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place.
Highways Agency project manager Tim Calvert said: “Unfortunately last weekend we were not able to remove a large bridge beam during our overnight closure.
“We reopened the motorway as scheduled on Sunday morning and in order to minimise disruption to drivers we plan to carry out further work overnight this weekend when traffic flows are lighter.”
