Two people have died after a car drove the wrong way down the M62.

The westbound at Junction 26 has been closed after a serious crash over night.

Due to a vehicle driving the wrong way, a serious accident has occurred and the road has been closed to facilitate investigation work.

West Yorkshire Police say: "At 2:34am on Monday 2 April, officers received a report of a vehicle driving the wrong way down the M62; travelling eastbound on the westbound carriageway at junction 26.

"Further calls to police reported a collision on the carriageway – officers attended and located two vehicles on the motorway.

"The vehicles involved were a white Skoda Octavia and a black Vauxhall Insignia.

"Two males, aged 34 and 37, were found deceased in the white vehicle.

"A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene for causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody at this time.

"There are road closures in place in both directions of the M62 whilst enquiries into the collision continue.

"Anyone with any information about the collision is asked to contact the police via 101 quoting log number *212 of 2 April."

Trapped traffic has been released. The road is likely to remain closed throughout morning rush hour.

M62 Westbound closed due to accident investigation work and recovery work between J27 M621 / A650 / A62 (Gildersome) and J26 M606 / A58 Whitehall Road / A638 Bradford Road (Chain Bar).

A diversion is via Junction 27, the A62 northbound and then the A650 westbound. Turn left at the junction with the A58 to head westbound then re-join the M62 at J26

Eyewitnesses say one of the cars involved in the tragedy ended up on the banking at the side of the M62.

Accident at Ainley Top too

One lane of the M62 is closed and slow traffic due to accident on M62 Westbound between J24 A629 (Ainley Top) and J22 A672 (Rishworth Moor). Travel time is ten minutes.

Lane three (of three) is closed.

This is a separate incident to the closure at junction 26.

Fire crews attended

Fire crews from Cleckheaton and Rastrick fire stations attended the tragedy on the M62 last night.

They assisted in the aftermath but then left the incident to West Yorkshire Police for investigation.

We understand that two people have been killed on the M26 this morning.

It follows a crash on the M62 this morning near Bradford.

Police say a car was traveling the wrong way on the westbound carriageway. The road remains closed between Junction 27 and Junction 26.
