Seven-year-old Maddie Hobson is leading the poo patrol at a Berry Brow school.

Parents and staff at Berry Brow Infant and Nursery School were disgusted at dog fouling on pavements on the school run.

So head teacher Mrs Jacqueline Hall brought in Kirklees Council’s dog warden and organised a design-a-poster competition.

Year two children got creative and Maddie’s design with the simple slogan: ‘Don’t Get Dog Poo on your Shoes’ was chosen as the best.

Maddie’s poster is now going to be printed as a leaflet to be delivered through letterboxes by the children themselves.

Mrs Hall said the school was determined to spread the word that failing to clean up after pets was not acceptable.

“Parents had raised this issue with us and expressed their frustrations to us,” she said.

“Parents walking to school were having to dodge dog poo and children were coming into school with it on their shoes and this was having to be cleaned off by staff.

“The year two children were doing a project on keeping safe and healthy and we decided to build this into their learning.”

Mrs Hall added: “It is a matter of reminding dog owners of their responsibilities. It is only one or two causing a problem but that is all it takes.”

Mrs Hall said Maddie’s design was “big, bold and beautiful” and she hoped dog owners would get the message.
