COUNCILLORS were called into court to be taught a lesson.

Huddersfield North Area Committee met for the first time ever at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

As well as discussing council matters for the Ashbrow, Lindley and Greenhead wards, councillors heard from magistrate David Longstaff about magistrates’ work and took a tour of the courts.

The meeting was attended by about 30 members of the public – about five times as many as the last meeting.

Greenhead councillor and council leader Mehboob Khan said: “The public attendance was very encouraging and the tour was extremely informative.

“Meeting with magistrates helped us to understand how they conduct their business and learn about the selfless work they do.

“It would be a good idea for us to meet in other venues and for people to suggest where we could meet to learn about other organisations.”

Magistrate David Longstaff said: “It’s a chance for the public to meet us face-to-face.

“I think it gave people a better understanding of what we do.

“It’s the first time we have ever done something like that and I would definitely like us to do it again, maybe with other community groups.”
