A COUNCILLOR has hailed “major progress” at St George’s Square.

Work on the £4m redevelopment ground to a halt last month when contractor Wrekin went into administration.

Kirklees Council took over the redevelopment and is negotiating with subcontractors to return to the site.

Twenty-five workers are now on site. Last week they paved 500 sq m of the square and installed four tree pits and a Christmas tree socket.

Grouting is also under way on existing areas of paving.

Kirklees Cabinet member for regeneration Clr Christine Stanfield said: “Major progress has been made since Kirklees took over the refurbishment. There is a long way to go yet, but it’s good to see so much paving going down so quickly.

“Our Community Rangers have spoken to local businesses, as well as people in the square, to let them know what is going on.”
