THEY are an integral part of life in Huddersfield.

Now a new postcard has been released to commemorate Huddersfield’s lively pub trade.

The postcard, designed by Liverpool artist Bernie Carroll, entitled Huddersfield Heritage Pub Crawl, show sketches of a number of Huddersfield pubs.

What started as a hobby for the Liverpool man quickly turned in to an obsession, with his Huddersfield postcards being part of a range of postcards from towns across the country.

Bernie said: “I’ve been drawing pubs for 25 years and I have covered a lot of towns across the country.

“A lot of people said don’t do Huddersfield, but I think the town has a lot to offer and has a number of nice pubs.

“The cards act as a record of what Huddersfield has today and I hope people will look back at them in 20 years time and say they remember the pubs I’ve drawn.

“I think I covered most of the pubs in and around the town centre in Huddersfield, but I know I have a lot more pubs on the outskirts to draw.”

The 53-year-old plans to introduce an update of the card in the new year, covering all of the pubs he has missed.

Bernie added: “All towns have something to offer. Huddersfield is nice and small and you can walk around it easily and see everything.”

Although Bernie had no formal training as an artist, his hobby has now seen him draw more than 600 pubs.

The postcards, which started with aLiverpool edition, have covered several areas of Yorkshire including Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield and Harrogate.

Bernie isn’t trying to make money from the cards. He said: “It isn’t a good money maker, but I get to see a lot of new places all of the time and that is why I enjoy it so much.

The cards are on sale at Huddersfield library and railway station.

Eagle-eyed pub regulars may spot a small discrepancy involving a popular Huddersfield pub. Can you tell which one it is?

ANSWER: The drawing of The Albert is of the Huddersfield town centre pub on Victoria Lane, but is captioned as being The Albert at Leymoor Road, Golcar, which has since been renamed The Old Cask Inn.
