A TASTY treat awaited visitors to Colne Valley Museum at the weekend.

The museum, at Cliffe Ash in Golcar, held a weekend celebration of the history of ‘havercakes’, a kind of oatcake popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Jane Lee (pictured) demonstrated the making the cakes before hanging them up in the kitchen of the museum.

Later, members of the of the 33rd Regiment of Foot, known as the ‘Haverboys’, made an appearance to sample the treats.

Legend has it that their recruiting sergeants would put the cakes on the end of their swords to attract starving would-be recruits.

The museum was also hosting an exhibition entitled In The Victorian Kitchen, displaying domestic treasures from a bygone age.(AC230208Ghave-1)
