A man is seriously ill in hospital after he was stabbed in the street in Oakes last night.

Detectives received the call at midnight on Saturday following an altercation in the Weymouth Avenue area of Oakes.

A 27-year-old man had suffered a stab wound to his flank and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with a puncture wound.

Officers sealed off the area immediately after the incident to preserve the scene.

Residents told they had seen the cordons but did not hear the altercation which is believed to have been near a block of flats called Malham Court.

A resident, who was carrying her baby daughter, said: “I just heard someone had been stabbed. I saw the road was cordoned off this morning.”

Police closed the road at the junction with Willwood Avenue and scenes of crimes officers were tasked to the scene.

Another woman, who did not wish to be named, said: “I didn’t hear anything. I just keep myself to myself. I know there are a few ‘undesirables’ living around here. It used to be a nice area.”

Police are appealing for witnesses and it is believed a number of people may have seen the disturbing incident unfold.
