A man was rescued by police after falling into the River Calder in Dewsbury last night.

The 55-year-old man is thought to have fallen from a bridge in Mill Street West close to the Asda superstore just after 7pm.

He had earlier been seen on the bridge and concerned onlookers called the emergency services.

Police arrived and officers on the river bank helped rescue the man from the water.

Firefighters and ambulance crews also responded to the incident.

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance, but his condition is not known at this stage.

A police spokesperson said: “Police were called to Mill Street West around 7pm on Tuesday evening following a report of a concern for safety.

“A 55-year-old man had entered the water and was assisted from the river bank by officers and was taken to hospital.”
