A MAN collapsed and died while walking home late at night.
Sixty-year-old Basil Widdowson was found collapsed on a pavement next to Halifax Road in Birchencliffe at 11.40pm on Monday night.
He’d been out to the King’s Head pub at Huddersfield railway station and got a taxi to Birchencliffe and was just walking the last bit when he collapsed.
He was taken to the nearby Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, but was pronounced dead a short time later.
He had suffered a heart attack and his death was due to natural causes.
A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “He kept himself to himself, but seemed pleasant enough. We saw all the blue flashing lights on Halifax Road. There were police cars and ambulances and an area was taped off.’’
The land off Halifax Road remained sealed off until yesterday morning when a post mortem confirmed that Mr Widdowson’s death was natural.
Coroner’s officer Fiona Turner is now trying to trace relatives.
She said: “He is not thought to have married, but we understand he may have had an aunt, probably in the Huddersfield area.’’
