A man was airlifted to hospital after being stabbed in the neck in Milnsbridge.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, is thought to have been attacked at a house in Armitage Road just before 12 noon today.

The ambulance service called police and the man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

It is understood the victim – though drenched in blood from a neck wound – was able to walk into the helicopter.

The air ambulance landed in the yard of Stotts Coaches in nearby Savile Street.

Richard Poulain, a driver and office manager at Stotts, said: “The man was absolutely covered in blood but was able to walk from the road ambulance to the air ambulance so I wouldn’t say his injuries were life threatening. I'm surprised they let him walk because he looked unsteady on his feet.

“From what I’ve heard there’s been some kind of incident and this must be the only place they could have landed.”

Mr Poulain, 67, a former football league referee and a long-serving club secretary at AFC Emley, said it was fortunate that the yard was open.

Usually the gates are locked up on a Saturday afternoon but Mr Poulain was in the office doing paperwork before heading for Manchester Airport later this afternoon.

He was due to collect the Huddersfield Town squad which was returning from a pre-season trip to Austria. Players and staff were due to fly in from Munich late this afternoon.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed a man in his 20s had suffered a suspected stab wound to his neck and enquiries were underway.

The spokesman said there had been a "small gathering" at a house and officers were at the scene this afternoon.
