A MAN attacked his partner in front of their frightened young child.

Daniel Coucill, 26, attacked Marie Haines after he returned home from a night out drinking.

He admitted the assault when he appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

The Huddersfield bench was told that Coucill lived with Miss Haines, their one-year-old child and her two children from a previous relationship.

On April 16 Coucill went out drinking with friends before returning to the family home in Chickenley, Dewsbury, just after midnight.

He banged on the door until Miss Haines let him in before she went up to bed with the youngest child.

Coucill then began shouting at her about her former partners.

Saj Hussain, prosecuting, said: “He climbed on the bed and grabbed her by the face.

“He got her into a headlock and bit her on her right cheek. The young child began screaming.

“The seven-year-old then came into the room and he tried to grab her from the bed.

“But he then rolled over onto the bed and fell asleep.”

Miss Haines got out of bed and called police, who arrived to find her sobbing.

Coucill said in interview that her account must be correct as he couldn’t remember the incident.

Magistrates were told that the family were keen to be reunited

They adjourned the case so that a full pre-sentence report could be prepared.

Coucill was granted unconditional bail until his next appearance on Tuesday, May 15.
