A man has appeared in court after police allegedly discovered £20,000 worth of cocaine in his car.

Stefan Beeby, of no fixed address, was before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He is charged with possession of the Class A drug with intent to supply it.

The 36-year-old faces further charges of assaulting a police constable acting in the execution of his duty and failing to provide a saliva sample to ascertain whether he had drugs in his system.

The court heard that police stopped Beeby’s Volkswagen Golf in Trinity Street near Huddersfield town centre at 2pm yesterday (May 10).

Prosecutor Alex Bozman said that he pushed the officers away and ran off.

He told magistrates that they found a large quantity of white powder inside the vehicle which tested positive for cocaine.

Mr Bozman said that there were 571 grams of the drug, with an estimated street value of £20,000.

Beeby denies the charges and faces trial at Leeds Crown Court.

He will first appear there on June 8 and magistrates remanded him in custody.
