A MAN stole from a supermarket because he wanted to buy Christmas gifts for the family he was staying with.

Robert Adamson, 56, was before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

He admitted stealing the Samsung TV from Asda in Huddersfield.

Vanessa Schofield, defending, said that on December 17 Adamson entered the Bradford Road store.

She said that he selected the £350 television from the display and carried it out of the store. Adamson was then followed out of the store by a staff member who asked him for a receipt.

He then left the car park, leaving the TV behind a trolley.

Magistrates heard that Adamson, of Hudson Gardens in Bradford, has over 150 convictions to his name.

Mark Newell, defending, said that the theft was committed in the run-up to the Christmas period.

He said that Adamson had been living in a communal house supplied by an agency.

But following an incident to which police were called he decided to live with some friends.

Mr Newell said: “He felt that he needed to buy presents for the family he was living with.

“It was a one-off offence to get the money together, he’s genuinely remorseful.”

Magistrates adjourned Adamson’s case for a full presentence report.

He will next appear before the court on May 21 for sentencing.
