A MAN appeared in court after drunkenly swearing at a police officer in Huddersfield town centre.

Leo Challoner, of Aberdeen Road, Leeds, was before Kirklees magistrates.

He admitted a charge of disorderly behaviour while drunk in a public place.

Vanessa Schofield, prosecuting, said that the offence happened at New North Parade on July 29.

She said that a police Community support officer witnessed Challoner’s drunken antics.

Ms Schofield said: “Challoner was very drunk and could not stand up straight. He began shouting and swearing.

“Because of his abusive language the Pcso was concerned and asked for assistance from a police officer.”

Magistrates heard that this officer was also sworn at and he arrested Challoner, 49.

Bob Carr, defending, said that his client had some difficulty with alcohol.

Magistrates heard that Challoner only received a conditional discharge from the court a couple of days previously for being drunk and disorderly.

Mr Carr told magistrates: “We’re looking for that elusive magic wand here.

“This man’s an alcoholic and whatever you do you are not going to prevent him from continuing being an alcoholic.”

Magistrates sentenced Challoner to a day’s detention already served for the offences.
