A MAN is due in court later today over the alleged theft of electric cables, which caused a power cut.

The 34-year-old, from Cleckheaton, will face Dewsbury magistrates charged with burglary and public nuisance.

The theft of cables from an electricity sub-station in Liversedge caused a power surge which led to hundreds of thousands of pounds damage and a power cut which hit more than 140 properties.

Elderly residents had to be evacuated from a care home because of the power cut.
