A MIDDLE-aged man is critically ill after an attack in Calderdale.

Police were called to Water Lane in Halifax at 1am on Saturday where they found the 52-year-old with serious head injuries.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he underwent emergency surgery. His current condition is said to be critical.

Detectives have now revealed that the attack was witnessed by two passers-by who chased the offender from the scene into the area of Union Street South and Heath View Street before he disappeared from sight.

The attacker is white and slim to medium build, in his early 20s with short cropped hair at the sides and with distinctive lips.

Ex Huddersfield policeman Det Supt Sukhbir Singh from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team who is leading the investigation said: “The man responsible appeared to be familiar with the area and I am confident people living in and around the area of South Union Road will recognise the description. I appeal to those people to come forward.”
