A man has died after apparently being struck by a car after violence in a Thornhill street.

Police were called to The Town, close to the Scarborough pub, at 9pm on Friday after reports that a man had been injured.

Early reports say that the man, believed to be in his early 30s, suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car.

He was taken to hospital where it is understood he later died.

The inquiry is being led by West Yorkshire's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team and the area around the scene has been cordoned off.

The Examiner believes there was some kind of fight in the street before the man was hit by the car and there were angry clashes involving as many as 30 youths.

'Thoughts with the family'

We’ve had a statement from Ben Still, at the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, which runs Huddersfield Bus Station, regarding this morning’s tragedy.

He said: “Our thoughts are with this gentleman’s family and friends at this sad time, as well as the customers and staff at Huddersfield Bus station who witnessed today’s events.

“Working with the police and bus operators, the decision was taken to screen off the affected area rather than close the whole bus station, to keep disruption to a minimum on what is a very busy day for Huddersfield.

“The Combined Authority will work closely with the police and other bodies on any resulting investigations.”

'Wrong place at the wrong time'

We’ve got some more information about what happened last night at Thornhill in which a 32-year-old man died after being hit by a car.

The landlord at the Scarborough pub, Richard Leather, who has been at the pub for 19 years, said the man who died was a regular customer, a tea-time drinker.

He said: “I understand he got run over but I wasn’t here at the time.
