A MAN was killed by a train at Marsden.

He was struck by the train on the main trans-Pennine line yesterday afternoon and is thought to have been killed instantly.

Police have confirmed they are not treating his death as suspicious but could not say if he had stepped into the path of the train or was struck by accident.

The incident happened very close to Marsden railway station off Station Road just after 3pm yesterday.

Rail services were halted as police mounted a major investigation.

Officers from British Transport Police and West Yorkshire Police were joined by crews from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service but the man’s death was confirmed very quickly.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “We were called at 3.01pm to Marsden station to reports of a person being struck by a train.

“Officers found the body of a man close to the railway track and sadly he had died.

“The incident is being treated as a non-suspicious death and has been reported to the Coroner.

“We suspended rail services during the inquiry but services resumed an hour later.

“We have spoken to a number of witnesses but any others can contact us on 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
