A MAN escaped from a blaze at his Golcar home after he fell asleep while cooking.

The man woke up to find his kitchen on fire.

Firefighters were called to a mid-terrace house in Second Avenue, Golcar, at 7.30pm on Monday.

Two fire engines from Huddersfield attended the scene and firefighters in breathing apparatus were sent in.

The fire had spread from the kitchen causing damage to the living room.

Smoke seeped through the roof void above and five neighbouring houses had to be evacuated.

Fire crews spent two hours at the scene clearing up.

A spokesman for Huddersfield Fire Station said it was thought the man was woken by smoke detectors.

He said the man rushed out and raised the alarm – which was the right thing to do – but shutting the living room door first would have prevented the flames from spreading so quickly.
