A MAN has been found dead after a mysterious house fire in Huddersfield.

The Examiner understands an Asian man in his late 20s was found dead yesterday lunchtime in a house at Shearing Cross Gardens, Hillhouse.

A neighbour of the victim, who did not want to be named, said she had made the grim discovery on her way back from the bus stop.

The woman said she did not know the man but had gone to check the property after noticing black smoke damage around a ground floor window.

She said: “When I went to town at about 10am I saw the black window and when I came back at 12.20pm I thought, ‘I’m going to have a look to check everything’s all right’.

“I opened the window and that’s when I saw him lying there.”

The woman, said she was still in shock, but said she had not seen any fire.

She also confirmed she had seen what she thought was the man’s family visiting the scene later in the afternoon.

Firefighters from Huddersfield arrived at the scene at 1pm but were not needed as the fire was already out.

Police cordoned the area off and last night two officers were still guarding the scene.

A police spokeswoman said they were still investigating and could not identify the victim but stated that the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

It is understood an official fire investigation is being carried out.

Other neighbours on the cul-de-sac adjacent to Bradford Road said they had not seen any fire.

One man said the dead man seemed like a nice guy and he had always said hello to him, but he did not know his name.
