A MAN killed by a train at Marsden is thought to be a missing student from Suffolk.

Police had put out a nationwide appeal on Tuesday expressing concern for the welfare of 18-year-old Gareth Oates.

The Stowmarket man went missing after being last seen at West Suffolk College.

It was also believed he may have been at Bury St Edmunds Railway Station.

But a spokesman from Suffolk Police yesterday said the body of a man found near the station at Marsden was believed to match Gareth’s description.

The statement said through extensive enquiries and CCTV viewing it had became apparent that Gareth had travelled to Yorkshire.

“Sadly late this afternoon Suffolk Police were informed there had been a fatality on the railway line.

“Although his identity has yet to be confirmed it is thought that this man is Mr Oates.”

The man was struck by a train on the main trans-Pennine line just after 3pm and is thought to have been killed instantly.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Rail services were suspended during the investigation.
