A MAN plummeted more than 100ft to his death after falling from a railway viaduct.

The man's body was spotted by a passing motorist close to the towering viaduct on Market Street in Milnsbridge early today.

He had landed close to the entrance to Bamforth's scrapyard and was not on the road.

Police confirmed the body was discovered at 3.15am today just as dawn was about to break.

Paramedics were called to the scene and declared the man dead.

His body was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Coroner's officer Gordon Hughes, who was called to the scene, said: "The man is a 45-year-old married man from the Marsh area.

"Relatives have been informed, but he has yet to be formally identified."

The man's death is not being treated as suspicious.

An inquest will be held later.

After the body was found, Market Street was closed at its junction with Lowergate - the main road running into Milnsbridge from Paddock - and Dale Street which leads up to Longwood.

The three roads were re-opened before 6am.
