One man was injured in a crash on the M62 in which a prison van driver stopped to help.

The crash happened on the M62 eastbound between Chain Bar and Gildersome but caused tailbacks to Ainley Top this afternoon (Thursday).

Rubber-necking motorists who slowed down to take a look caused congestion on the opposite carriageway.

West Yorkshire Police said they were called at 3.15pm to the junction 27 area. They found a red Rover car which had been hit by a heavy goods vehicle.

A 70-year-old man, thought to be the Rover driver, was injured, although not seriously. He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

A spokesperson for prisoner transport firm, GEOAmey, said: "The driver of the prison van stopped at the scene to assist and had not been involved in the accident."

It is not known whether any prisoners were on board at the time.
