POLICE have arrested a man in connection with a road crash that killed three Wetherby sixth form students.

A 20-year-old man from Harrogate has been arrested and interviewed in connection with the horrific smash on the A58 Wetherby Road on Friday, West Yorkshire police said.

He has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Close friends Oliver Cross, Thomas Dunn and Michael Tempest, all aged 16, were killed in the accident.

Michael was the son for former Huddersfield Town player Dale Tempest, who now works as a TV betting expert.

The 17-year-old driver of the car, who has not been named, was seriously injured and is being treated at York District Hospital.

The teenagers were travelling in a red Ford Escort when it was involved in an accident with a silver Renault Kangoo between Collingham and Wetherby.

The 62-year-old woman driver of the Kangoo suffered a broken leg in the crash, while her 68-year-old husband escaped with cuts and bruises.

The teenagers had recently left Wetherby School and were in the sixth form at St Aiden's School in Harrogate, police said today.

Superintendent Dave Buxton said the boys lived in Wetherby, while the couple in the Kangoo came from Durham.

He said that, prior to the accident, the four teenagers had enjoyed a pizza in Collingham and were making the one-mile journey back to Wetherby when the accident happened.
