A MAN is critically ill after he was battered in what police have described as a vicious street attack.

The 34-year-old was found unconscious outside the Oasis restaurant on Bradford Road in Batley at 1.25am today.

He had suffered serious head injuries, thought to have been caused by a blunt instrument.

Police had been called to the scene after reports of a fracas involving several men.

He was taken to Dewsbury District Hospital, but then transferred to Leeds General Infirmary.

He was said to be in a critical condition in the intensive care unit this morning.

The man, who has not been named, comes from the East Ardsley area near Leeds.

Insp Bob Johnston, of Dewsbury police, said: "This was a particularly vicious assault and we are keen to trace those responsible.

"Inquiries are going on, but are still at an early stage."

Four men have been arrested in connection with the incident and are being questioned at Dewsbury police station.

They are said to be local to the Batley area.
