A MAN has been found guilty of raping a former special needs pupil.

After a five-day trial at Bradford Crown Court a jury returned guilty verdicts by majorities of 11 to 1 in the case of Huddersfield student John Hanrahan, 20.

The jury heard how in May this year Hanrahan tried chatting up the woman.

She was described as `vulnerable and naive' and despite her requests to go away he still hassled her.

The 21-year-old victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was in Huddersfield bus station, intending to travel back to her home in Bradford.

But she ended up getting on a bus which went near Hanrahan's 10th-floor flat at Holme Park Court, Berry Brow.

She told the jury how he took her up to his flat in a lift and then raped her on a sofa bed.

Hanrahan, who has a previous conviction for sexual assault, had denied rape and false imprisonment.

Barrister Sophie Drake, for Hanrahan, asked for his sentence to be adjourned for the preparation of a report.

Judge Jonathan Durham-Hall said he needed a report to assess the risk posed by Hanrahan, who will be sentenced next month.

He added: "I take the most extreme and grave view of what happened, not least because a completely vulnerable young woman was completely overborne in terms of her freedom and held captive."

A security guard at the flats called the police when he saw Hanrahan going into the premises with the victim.

Police found the woman naked and bleeding in a bath.

Judge Durham-Hall said he wanted an up-to-date statement from the victim, so he knew precisely the effect that her ordeal had had on her.

Hanrahan was remanded in custody to await his sentence, which is expected to be imposed on December 16.
