POLICE have released a man they were questioning after a fatal house fire in Huddersfield.

The 65-year-old man was released pending further police inquiries, hours after the blaze in College Street, Crosland Moor.

The fire on Wednesday night claimed the life of 59-year-old Mrs Sandra Appleyard, who lived at the house with her husband, Brian.

She was carried from the house by firefighters who found her in a bedroom. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but police said today it was no longer being treated as suspicious after a detailed forensic examination of the scene and a Home Office post mortem.

Malcolm Shaw, steward at Crosland Moor Working Men's Club said the couple had been regulars for many years.

He said: "I was brought up with them."

Mr Shaw said Mrs Appleyard had been unwell with breathing problems and needed oxygen.

"She was here about a month ago but had an oxygen bottle with her. She was not a well woman."

He said representatives from the club would be attending her funeral.

Brian had played dominoes for the club for many years.

"Brian used to be in more or less every night. He came in on Sunday and had a drink but most of his time recently has been spent looking after Sandra," said Mr Shaw.
