A man continually called police as a cry for attention.

Kirklees Magistrates Court heard how 38-year-old Ravinder Singh Chungh phoned 999 15 times in between April 24, 2015 and March 18, 2016.

Chungh, of Keldregate in Bradley, was said to have a problem with alcohol and was drinking to try and cope with his mother’s terminal cancer.

Charlotte Alport, prosecuting, said in the latest emergency call Chungh made up a story to police that one of his relatives had gone missing.

Chungh reportedly told police he believed his relative to be suicidal but wouldn’t give them his address.

“Police carried out an assessment and found that he had made 15 calls from the same phone number”, said Ms Alport.

“Police found him at home in bed in drink in possession of two phones and arrested him.

“He told them that he just wanted some attention and alleged that man behind a bar he had been drinking at had made the prank calls.”

Mitigating, Marmat Al, said: “His mother has cancer and is in hospital in Newcastle.

“He has struggled to cope with this and it has led to him questioning his own mortality.

“He has issues with alcohol and has used it to deal with this situation.”

A probation report found that Chungh had been drinking mainly spirits since his late teens.

His drinking had increased following a break up from his wife in 2010.

John Gledhill, lead magistrate, sentenced Chungh to a six month community order with six month alcohol treatment order.

He was told to pay £210 as a fine and to cover a victim surcharge and court costs.
