A MAN was rescued from a Huddersfield hotel after a suspicious blaze.

He was overcome by smoke during the fire at the Cambridge Road Hotel on Clare Hill.

It is believed he was helping the hotel owner rescue a third man.

The owner was able to get clear. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus took the second man to safety.

Police say the third man disappeared.

Huddersfield crew manager Dave Boothroyd said: “The cause is still under investigation but it is looking suspicious.

“A man was taken to hospital suffering from bad smoke inhalation.

“It wasn’t his room where the fire started, he and the hotel manager got another man out of the room who then subsequently disappeared.”

Around 20 residents were staying at the hotel when the blaze broke out at 3.45am yesterday.

The fire is believed to have started in one of the rooms, with smoke spreading throughout the hotel.
