A man was robbed after withdrawing money from a cash machine in Berry Brow.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the robbery which happened at around 12.35am on Friday on Newsome Road.

The 20-year-old man had just taken cash from the ATM machine on Newsome Road and had begun to walk along Birch Road when he was approached from behind by a man who shouted at him.

He ignored the man but stumbled on steps behind Berry Brow railway station and fell to the ground.

He was then forced to hand over cash and the suspect fled.

Det Sgt Nigel Gittins from Kirklees District CID said: “The victim was shouted at a number of times from behind as he made his way down the steps behind Berry Brow railway station before he stumbled to the floor and was confronted by a man demanding money.

“After further demands, and fearing that violence would be used against him, the victim has handed over an amount of cash.

“Even though it was late in the evening I believe that someone will have seen something and I would urge them to come forward.”
