A man has been seriously injured after being assaulted in Dewsbury town centre in the early hours of this morning.

The 46-year-old victim was assaulted outside the Asda store in Mill Street West at about 12.30am.

It is believed a knife was used in the attack.

Police say he suffered a serious injury and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary. His condition is not known, but the injuries he sustained are not thought to be life threatening.

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident, and police are appealing for anyone with information, or anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident, to come forward.

Det Sgt Ian Thornes, of Huddersfield CID, said: “We would urge anyone who was in the vicinity of this incident this morning to come forward with any information.

“Anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information is asked to contact myself at Huddersfield CID via 101 quoting reference 0024 of 11 March, or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Police say a 44-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the incident and enquiries are ongoing.
