A man is being treated by medics after reportedly attempting to slash his own throat at Kirklees Magistrates' Court this afternoon.

The man, who was in court two, is believed to have been sentenced to 16 weeks in jail.

The Examiner understands he then removed a bladed item from inside a packet he had in his pocket before attacking himself.

The court was cleared and police and ambulance crews attended the scene.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "A 20-year-old man has been taken to hospital with a neck wound following an incident in Court Two at Kirklees Magistrates' Court at 2.54pm.

"He was conscious and breathing."

The man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment.
