AN addict stole razor blades in a bid to score his next drugs fix.

Manjit Singh, of Yew Green Avenue in Lockwood, admitted the theft from Wilkinsons in Huddersfield.

Kirklees magistrates were told the theft, at the New Street branch, happened on January 14.

Bill Astin, prosecuting, said Singh selected five packets of Gillette razor blades and placed them in a carrier bag.

He then swung the bag over the security barriers to exit the store without paying.

Magistrates were told that a staff member gave chase, aided by a police officer who happened to be in the store.

Singh, 43, was caught and escorted back into the shop.

In interview he claimed that at the time of the offence he had no money.

Singh said that he walked into town to find something to steal so that he could buy drugs.

Mark Brookes, mitigating, said his client turned to crime 10 years ago.

He said this happened when Singh became addicted to opiates.

Mr Brookes said that for past offences Singh had been jailed as he had felt unable to cope with a community sentence.

Magistrates adjourned his case until February 8.

This is so Singh can be assessed for a drugs intervention programme.

He was banned from entering Wilkinsons as part of his bail conditions.
