DRIVING expert Michael Coyle could be the motorists' champion.

Dr Coyle today started a practical course at the University of Huddersfield - teaching transport operators how to save fuel.

And his expertise could be vital in helping car drivers save fuel in a time of soaring costs and dwindling supplies.

Dr Coyle, a former lorry driver, studied transport and distribution for a degree at Huddersfield.

He later returned to earn a Phd in fuel efficiency and now, through his company Imise Ltd, works with the University to produce "fuel champions".

A new course for 50 students from across the UK started today. The aim is to encourage operators to reduce fuel bills.

Dr Coyle said: "It is aimed at haulage fleet operators but I am developing one for cars and vans.

"A study with the Government, called Safer and Fuel Efficient Driving, produced some excellent results.

"The study of 5,500 drivers saw average fuel savings of 9% and a 33% reduction in the number of gear changes, which saves wear and tear on clutches and gearboxes.

"How we drive can have a big impact on fuel consmption and that is vital".
