A FORMER mansion and student hostel may be demolished.

Kirklees Council planners have received a demolition notification for the privately owned Bankfield House on Holmcliffe Avenue, Taylor Hill.

They can only disagree with the application if the building is worthy of listed building status.

A planning spokesman said a previous demolition notification for the building had expired.

Advice from several groups, including the English Heritage watchdog, had been sought at that time and the building was found to be not significant enough in architectural terms to be listed.

Bankfield House is currently rented privately and was formerly owned by Huddersfield University when it was the polytechnic.

Students lived in the house for about 20 years before the building was sold.

In 1998, planning permission was sought to use the site for housing. Permission was refused, but this was overturned at an appeal.

This planning permission has now expired.

A decision on the demolition notification is expected within the next few weeks.
