OAKES couple Edith and Frank Wood celebrated 65 years of marriage yesterday.

The couple, of Chiltern Avenue, were married on September 5, 1939 at Huddersfield Register Office - two days after the Second World War broke out.

They were both 19. They had met at a dance at the former Cambridge Road baths in Huddersfield a year before.

Mrs Wood, who lived in Fitzwilliam Street, was a sewing machinist.

Her husband, who was from Moldgreen, was in the Territorial Army.

He was quickly called up to join the Royal Artillery.

He left the Army years later and set up his own joinery business in 1956. He retired in 1985.

The couple are very active and still love dancing. They go to dances held by the Huddersfield Royal British Legion, of which Mr Wood is a member.

He is also in the Huddersfield Army Veterans' Association, Huddersfield Probus Club and the University of the Third Age.

His wife is also in the University of the Third Age and enjoys painting and music.

The couple have a son, three daughters, 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

To celebrate their anniversary, they spent a week's holiday in Scotland and had a family party yesterday at the home of one of their daughters in Mount.
